SUMMARY

In some cases when you use another application to create or edit an embedded object in Publisher, the other application places its tools, menus, and toolbars directly in the Publisher work area. You can then use these tools to create or edit the object. This type of editing is called "in-place" editing. The following article describes in-place editing.

MORE INFORMATION

In-place editing is a feature of Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) 2.0. In-place editing allows OLE 2.0 source applications to place their tools, menus, and other controls in an OLE destination's application window. This allows people to directly edit their data in a destination application, instead of opening up the source application for editing.

In Publisher, the tools on the toolbar change depending on what type of Publisher object is selected. This provides the set of tools needed to modify that type of Publisher object. When an OLE 2.0 object is double-clicked, Publisher's menus, toolbar, and other controls change to provide a set of tools needed to modify that type of OLE object, (that is, the toolbar and menus will change to those of the OLE source application, and any necessary additional controls, such as floating palettes, will appear).

Any OLE 2.0 source application can support in-place editing. However, these sources must also support the traditional open editing (OLE 1.0-style editing) as well. At the minimum, these sources must support two actions on an embedded object: Edit and Open. WordArt 2.0 is an example of this type of OLE 2.0 source application.

OLE 1.0 sources (WordArt 1.0, for example) do not support in-place editing.
