BUG: Dumping to a Compaq SystemPro DAT Tape - Stops Responding

PSS ID Number: Q101848 Article last modified on 07-23-1993

4.20a OS/2 buglist4.2a

Problem ID: Bug# 1706

SYMPTOMS

When dumping to a 1.3/2.0 GB tape from a SQL Server version 4.2a running on a Compaq SystemPro, the SQL Server may stop responding. Existing connections are frozen or will time out. Often, the only recourse is to power off the computer, because OS/2 will refuse to shut down, saying that not all processes could be terminated. When dumping to a 5 GB tape drive, the tape dump may stop responding with no messages, but SQL Server continues to run and accept new connections. However, you may not be able to shut down SQL Server or OS/2. This only happens with Sytos version 1.35 tape drivers and SQL Server version 4.2a.

WORKAROUND

Using the Sytos Plus software to perform any tape operation properly initializes the tape interface, and allows SQL Server to use the tape until the next time SQL Server is shut down.

Example

  1. Restart SQL Server.
  2. Start Sytos Plus.
  3. Insert any tape into the drive.
  4. From the Utilities menu, choose Media Preparation.
  5. Choose View Volume Info. You should now be able to dump the tape from SQL Server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 4.2a. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
