The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1 - Microsoft MS-DOS operating system version 5.0 - Microsoft Works for Windows, versions 2.0 and 2.0a

SYMPTOMS

If you try to install version 2.0 or 2.0a of Microsoft Works for Windows on the Hewlett-Packard (HP) OmniBook 300, the Microsoft Works setup program fails. The following error message is displayed:

Unable to write to drive D:

CAUSE

The setup program for Microsoft Works for Windows refers to the WIN.INI file to locate the directory and path of files to be updated and modified. Some WIN.INI settings point to the read-only memory (ROM) drive on the HP OmniBook 300. The Works for Windows setup program fails because it is unable to update or modify files on the ROM drive.

WORKAROUND

To install Works for Windows on the HP OmniBook 300, do the following:

  1. Copy all the filter (.FLT), converter (.CNV), and spelling checker (.LEX) files from the ROM drive (usually drive D) to a RAM drive (usually drive C) in the same directory tree.
  2. Modify the WIN.INI file to reflect the new location for all these files. To do this, use an editor that has the ability to search on strings (such as SYSEDIT). Search for each of the extensions listed in step 1 and update the path on that line.
  3. Save the changes.
  4. Quit and then restart Windows.
  5. Start the Microsoft Works for Windows setup program.
