Excel: User Defined Function Not in Paste Function Dialog Box

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q101645

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel version 4.0a for Windows, the User Defined category may not appear in the Paste Function dialog box after you use this category to define a custom function. This behavior occurs after you close and reopen the macro sheet that contains this custom function.

WORKAROUND

When this behavior occurs, the custom function you created will be contained in the ALL category. If you want to use the Paste Function command (located on the Formula menu) to paste your function in a cell, you will first need to select ALL as the function category in the Paste Function dialog box.

This behavior does not occur if you are using a custom category that you created. When you define the custom function, type a category name (such as Bob's Functions) in the Category box. This category that you create will apper in the Paste Function dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. This problem does not occur in later versions.
