The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, and 2.0c for Windows - Microsoft Word versions 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0 for MS-DOS - Microsoft Word versions 5.0, 5.1, and 5.1a for the Macintosh

SUMMARY

K-Talk Communication’s “MathPORT” conversion product is advertised as being capable of converting equation and other typesetting definitions from Tex and LaTeX, DERIVE, Maple, Mathematica, and WordPerfect formats to TIFF, EPS, or EPS with TIFF preview graphic images that can subsequently be inserted as pictures into any of our Word family products in order to retain appearance.

In addition, K-Talk also offers a conversion product known as “TexPORT” that converts actual textual equation definitions from TeX and LaTeX typesetting formats to WordPerfect equation definition format. Because the WordPerfect converter supplied with Word versions 2.0b and 2.0c for Windows supports conversion of WordPerfect equation definitions to equivalent EQ field definitions in Word, TexPORT’s ability to translate TeX and LaTeX equation definitions to WordPerfect equation format provides an avenue in which to convert Tex and LaTeX equations to editable equation definitions in Word.

Finally, K-TALK offers a conversion product known as “Publishing Companion” that translates WordPerfect documents into TeX format. According to K-TALK, most WordPerfect commands are retained. Once again, because Word supports conversion to WordPerfect format, a Word document can be ported to TeX using Publishing Companion. Note however that because we currently export equations to WordPerfect format as static graphic images, an equation definition itself cannot be translated from Word equation format to TeX using Publishing Companion.

MORE INFORMATION

TeX, pronounced “tech,” is a typesetting/formatting system designed to handle complex typesetting tasks including books, technical journals, scientific notation, mathematical formulas, charts, and tables. Various implementations of TeX exist to service different audiences. For example, AmS-TeX, is a TeX macro set developed by the American Mathematical Society especially for mathematicians. TeX processing systems such as Personal TeX, Incorporated’s “PC TeX” are marketed by several vendors for mainframe and/or personal computers.

For example, Personal TeX, Incorporated’s PC TeX accepts ASCII text files created with a word processor or text editor that contain TeX formatting commands. PC TeX reads the file, composes (formats) it, and outputs a device independent (DVI) file of commands. Using other utilities supplied by Personal TeX, Incorporated, TeX DVI files can be viewed on screen, sent directly to your printer, or can be diverted into printer-ready files containing the commands specific to your printer. The DVI file can also be sent to a publisher for printing at a later time.

The products referred to here are provided by a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products’ performance or reliability.
