The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project for Windows, versions 3.0, 3.0a - Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, version 3.0

In Microsoft Project version 3.0, an entry in the Macro Definition Dialog Box cannot exceed 8191 characters.

Steps to Reproduce Situation in Windows

  1. In Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu. In the command line, type “Write” (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.
  2. From the WINPROJ directory, open the README.WRI file.
  3. Select all of the text and choose Copy from the Edit menu.
  4. Start Microsoft Project.
  5. From the Macro menu, choose Define Macro, and select New. Place the cursor in the entry window and choose Paste.
  6. Select all of the text and choose Copy.
  7. Start Microsoft Word for Windows and from the Edit menu, choose Paste.
  8. From the File menu, select Summary Info. Select Statistics. The number of characters is listed as 8191 characters.

A way to exceed the 8191 characters is to call a macro from within your macro. For example a line in your macro could say “Macro [macro name]” (without quotation marks) where macro name is the name of another macro as listed in the Define Macros dialog box.
