Windows Not Running in 386 Enhanced Mode After WPS Setup

PSS ID Number: Q101263 Article last modified on 09-09-1996

WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Printing System version 1.0 - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.1, 3.11

SYMPTOMS

When you restart Microsoft Windows 3.1 in 386 enhanced mode after you install the Microsoft Windows Printing System (WPS) version 1.0, you are returned to an MS-DOS command prompt.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, modify the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file by either inserting a semicolon (;) at the beginning of any third-party virtual communication driver or at the beginning of the Windows virtual communication driver (VCD.386) as follows:

DEVICE=VCD.386

The installation of the Windows Printing System places the line DEVICE=VCD.386 in the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file. The purpose of this driver is to provide serial bidirectional communication for a Hewlett-Packard (HP) series printer. If the printer requires parallel communication, then the Windows virtual communication driver may not be required.
