Microsoft FAX Driver Does Not Install Send Fax Command in Word

Last reviewed: July 30, 1997
Article ID: Q100787

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SUMMARY

The Microsoft FAX Windows printer driver, supplied with the Microsoft Mail version 3.2 server package and with the Microsoft Mail Gateway to FAX version 3.0a, does not install the Send Fax macro in Word for Windows under low memory conditions. Instead, the following error message appears and Windows aborts the printer driver installation:

Not enough memory to run Word.

Similarly, the Microsoft FAX driver does not install the Send Fax macro in Word if the Word program directory is not in your MS-DOS PATH statement.

Workaround

Manually install the Send Fax macro using one of the following procedures:

Method 1: Add the Word program directory to your PATH statement.

NOTE: Use this method if the Send Fax command installation failed
because Word is not in your PATH statement.

In the Printers window of the Windows Control Panel, remove the Microsoft FAX printer driver. Using a text editor, add the Word for Windows program directory to your PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Reinstall the Microsoft FAX driver.

Method 2: Use the FAXAUTO.DOC file.

  1. In Word, open the FAXAUTO.DOC file, located on the Microsoft FAX disk.
  2. The FAXAUTO.DOC file automatically installs the Send Fax macro and then exits Word.

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
