SUMMARY

Microsoft Works for MS-DOS does not directly support the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4M printer. According to the “HP LaserJet 4 and 4M Printers User’s Manual,” in standard mode it emulates the LaserJet 4 and LaserJet III series printers.

These printers are supported in Works 3.0 by the printer drivers HP4.PRD and HP3.PRD, which are included on shipped disks. In Works 2.0, the LaserJet III is supported by HP3UPD.PRD, which is available on the Microsoft Works Conversion and Supplemental Setup Kit #1. To use the LaserJet 4M in PostScript mode, use the HPIIIsi PostScript driver for Works 3.0 or use the standard PostScript driver for Works 2.0.

Microsoft has not tested these emulations and therefore cannot guarantee their results.

To obtain the supplemental kit, call Microsoft End User Sales at (800) 426-9400 and request the Microsoft Works Conversion and Supplemental Setup Kit #1 for Works version 2.0. If you call from outside the United States, call International Customer Service at (425) 936-8661.

MORE INFORMATION

PostScript Mode

To print in PostScript mode in Works 3.0, install the printer driver for the HP LaserJet IIIsi with PostScript option (PSNET.PRD). This printer driver prints all the standard PostScript fonts and can automatically switch from standard mode to PostScript mode, but does not support 600 dpi resolution.

HPPCL (Standard) Mode

To print in the standard HPPCL mode in Works 3.0, use one of the following methods:

  1. Use the LaserJet 4 driver, HP4.PRD. This supports all of the LaserJet 4 fonts, but does not automatically switch modes. This means that if you’re in PostScript mode and you switch to the LaserJet 4 driver, you will need to manually reset the printer before printing the next document. Otherwise, the next document sent to the printer is used to reset the printer and never gets printed.

    -or-

  2. Install the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIIsi driver, HP3.PRD. It will automatically switch from PostScript mode, but does not support all the LaserJet 4 specific fonts (like Marigold and Coronet) that HP4.PRD does. HP3.PRD does not support 600 dpi resolution.
