SUMMARY

In Word for Windows 1.x - 2.x, the following fields cannot be unlinked:

AUTONUM, AUTONUMLGL, AUTONUMOUT, EQ, XE, RD, SYMBOL (Word version 2.0 only), and TC

In Word for Windows 6.x - 97, the following fields cannot be unlinked:

AUTONUM, AUTONUMLGL, AUTONUMOUT, ADVANCE, BARCODE, PRIVATE, SYMBOL EQ, RD, TA, TC, XE

MORE INFORMATION

You can unlink a field in Word for Windows by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F9 with the insertion point in the field. Most fields will be replaced with their most recent results. However, the fields listed above will not be unlinked with this key combination.

If you press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 with one of those fields selected, the system will beep and the field will not be unlinked. This behavior is by design.

Word Versions 1.x

If you press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 with a TC, XE, or RD field selected, the system will beep, and the field will not be unlinked.

Page 89 of the "User's Reference" incorrectly states that the Unlink Field command (CTRL+SHIFT+F9) removes any Index Entry (XE), Table of Contents Entry (TC), and Referenced Document (RD) fields from a document in the selected area. The Unlink Field keys do not remove these fields.

If you press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 with an AUTONUM, AUTONUMOUT, AUTONUMLGL, SEQ (only version 1.0), IMPORT (with the exceptions of TIFF and PCX in version 1.1a), or EQ field selected, the field itself will be deleted from the document.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1a. This problem was corrected in Word for Windows version 2.0.

For more information on unlinking an IMPORT field, query on the following words in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
