Installing Word for Windows OLE Apps on an HP OmniBook 300 |

SUMMARY
Some object-linking-and-embedding (OLE) applications in Microsoft Word for Windows 2.0c do not come with the Hewlett-Packard (HP) OmniBook 300 but can be installed.
OmniBook owners are licensed for the full software package of each product, but only part of each software package comes preinstalled. Contact Hewlett-Packard to obtain the additional files.
When you install Microsoft Word for Windows OLE applications on the OmniBook, the WINDIR environment variable must be reset and the REGEDIT program may need to be updated. Word for Windows OLE applications include WordArt, Equation Editor, Microsoft Graph, and Microsoft Draw.

The WINDIR environment variable is set to the Flash read-only memory (ROM) drive on the HP OmniBook 300. Most OLE applications look at the WINDIR environment variable to locate the Windows directory and install into the <WINDIR>\MSAPPS directory. However, files cannot be copied to a Flash ROM drive because it is read only.
Installing the Full Application
To install OLE applications:
- Use a text editor (such as Microsoft Windows Notepad) to create a file called WINSTART.BAT.
Type the following on the first line:
set windir=c:\windows
NOTE: The SET WINDIR variable should be set to the Flash random-access memory (RAM) drive. In this example, the Flash RAM is located on drive C.
- Save the WINSTART.BAT file in the Windows directory on the Flash RAM drive.
- Quit and then restart Windows. This changes the WINDIR environment variable from the Flash ROM drive to the Flash RAM drive.
- From Control Panel, connect to a computer using LapLink Remote. For information on using LapLink Remote, refer to "Making a Serial Connection to a PC" in the "HP OmniBook 300 Operating Guide."
- Expand the application. For more information, refer to "To expand from Microsoft Word for Windows 2.0" in the "HP OmniBook 300 Operating Guide."
- Once the OLE application is installed, quit Windows and delete the WINSTART.BAT file created in step 1.
Editing the REG.DAT File
You may also need to edit the REG.DAT file. To do this, use the following steps:
- Copy REGEDIT.EXE from the Windows directory on the computer with a full version of Word for Windows to the Windows directory on the Flash RAM drive of the OmniBook 300.
In Program Manager, choose Run from the Windows File menu, type the following, and choose OK:
regedit.exe /v
- From the REGEDIT File menu, choose Merge Registration File.
- Select the WW20.REG file that resides in the Word for Windows directory (usually WINWORD) on your computer and choose OK. This merges the information about the OLE application into the REG.DAT file in the Windows directory on the Flash RAM drive.
- You may need to change path information for the OLE application. To do this, scroll through the REG.DAT file. Wherever the file location is incorrect for SERVER, change the value to the correct file location on the Flash RAM drive.
- Exit REGEDIT.EXE.
