SYMPTOMS
If you change the Country in the International section of the Windows 3.x Control Panel or in the Regional Settings of the Windows 95 Control Panel, the following errors may occur in Works:
- The error message "Number not valid" may be displayed when you try to specify a range of pages in the Print dialog box.
- In dialog boxes containing numeric entries, commas appear in place of the decimals. In Works 2.0, if you try to change a comma to a decimal, the "Unit not valid" or "Number not valid" error message appears. In Works 3.0, the number may be incorrectly interpreted. For example, a 1.5 Line Spacing setting is changed to 6. This problem will occur in the following dialog boxes:
- Page Setup & Margins (version 2.0) or Page Setup (version 3.0)
- Indents and Spacing (version 2.0) or Paragraph (version 3.0)
- Tabs
- Font & Style
- Column width
- Row Height (version 3.0)
- In existing numeric entries in the Spreadsheet and Database modules, commas appear in place of the decimals. For example, 1.00 is displayed as 1,00.
- In new entries in the Spreadsheet and Database modules, Works interprets decimal numbers as text, even though a non-text format has been selected.
- In the Print dialog box, the Print Range may be ignored. Even if you select specific pages, the whole document may be printed.
RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, make the following change:
If You Are Using Windows 95
- Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Regional Settings icon.
- Ensure that the Regional Settings are set correctly. For example, set this to English (United States).
- Click the Number tab, and make sure that the Decimal symbol is set to a period, and that the Digit grouping symbol is set to a comma.
If You Are Using Windows 3.x
- In Control Panel, double-click the International icon.
The International dialog box appears.
- In the Country list, select the correct country (for example, the United States), and click OK.
- In the Number Format box, click the Change button, and make sure that the 1000 Separator is set to a comma, and that the Decimal Separator is set to a period. Click OK.
- Click OK again to close the International Control Panel.
MORE INFORMATION
This problem occurs as a result of the corresponding changes the Country setting makes to other areas of the International Control Panel, such as the Decimal Separator character. Therefore, problems may also occur with the Country set to United States, if other settings in the International Control Panel were changed.
If you change the Control Panel settings in Windows 3.x, and this does not correct the problem, verify the following lines in the [intl] section of the Win.ini:
sDecimal=.
sList=,
Also, make sure that there are not duplicate copies of the Win.ini on the system.
