PRJ3: Write Reserved Password Ignored If File Opened Read Only

PSS ID Number: Q100002 Article last modified on 09-20-1995

3.00 3.00a

WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project for Windows, versions 3.0, 3.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you open the first instance of a file with a write-reserved password opened in Microsoft Project for Windows, and you choose the Read Only button in the password dialog box, all other instances of the file that are opened concurrently will have a read-only protection status.

This happens no matter if the next instance of the file is accessed from Microsoft Project for the Macintosh or Microsoft Project for Windows.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, close the first file that was opened as read only. The write-reserved password will function correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Project version 3.0 for Windows. This problem was corrected in a later version of Microsoft Project.

MORE INFORMATION

Normally, when you open a file with a write-reserved password, you are prompted for the password. If you enter the correct password, the file will be opened and and you can edit it. If you do not have the password, then you can choose the Read Only button; the file will be opened, but you will not be able to make editing changes.

If the file is opened but the Read Only button is chosen, anyone else who tries to access the same file, concurrently, will not be prompted to enter the write reserved password and will receive a dialog box stating that the file has a read-only protection status. The file will be opened, but you will not be able to make any editing changes.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a new project.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save As and type a password in the Write Reserved Password box.
  3. Select a network drive or share where you can save the file so it can be accessed from at least two other computers.
  4. Choose the Save button.
  5. From the File menu, choose Close.
  6. Run Microsoft Project on one computer and open the file that you saved in Step 1.
  7. When you are prompted for the Write Reserved Password, choose the Read Only button. Leave the file loaded on this first computer and go to another computer.
  8. Run Microsoft Project from the second computer and open the same file (The file is still loaded on the first computer).
  9. You will be alerted that the file is read-only (instead of being prompted for the write-reserved password). Choose the OK button.
