Underline Prints Incorrectly with Some Decorative Fonts

ID: Q100000

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SYMPTOMS

When underlined text includes a decorative font character, such as Symbol or Wingdings, the underline on the decorative font may misalign with the underline on other non-decorative font characters. Usually the underline on the decorative font prints slightly higher than the underline on the other fonts.

This misalignment does not occur if all underlined characters are formatted with the same font.

CAUSE

Several factors affect whether or not the underline prints correctly and the extent to which the underline misaligns, including the following:

  • The specific fonts of the symbol and text characters (some combinations misalign to a greater extent than others).
  • Other character formatting, such as bold and italic.
  • The program from which you print the file.

Due to differences in font manipulation and underline formatting, this misalignment does not occur in some programs. For example, this problem occurs in Windows Write and Word for Windows; however, it may not occur in other applications.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
