PlayStation 2, released in March 2000 in Japan (Oct. for North America, Nov. for Europe), is the successor of the PlayStation. It featured backwards compatibility for the original PlayStation's games and controllers. The PlayStation 2 was apart of the sixth-generation of video game consoles, and remained popular into the seventh-generation. It competed with the Sega Dreamcast, Microsoft's Xbox, and the Nintendo GameCube. The console featured support for external or internal hard drives, DVD remote control, USB motion camera and many more. In 2004 a slimline version of the PlayStation 2 was released with a significantly thinner profile, which lacked support for the 3.5" expansion bay. Users could play online via a broadband internet connection and a PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor. The PlayStation 2 is currently the best selling video game console in history, selling over 150 million consoles and releases more than 3,874 game titles. The PlayStation 3 was announced and launched in 2006 and had many more extensive features than it's predecessor. The PlayStation 2 console was discontinued in 2013, and the PlayStation 4 was announced later that year.
