256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
After you enable the "Systems Management Server Advanced Client Updates" option in the Sms_def.mof file in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, you receive the following error in the InventoryAgent.log file on the SMS Advanced Client: Unknown error encountered processing an instance of class Win32Reg_AdvCliUpdates: 80041001
This behavior occurs because the "SMS Advanced Client Updates" option is used to locate SMS 2003 client updates. When you install a software update on the SMS Advanced Client, the following registry subkey is created:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Updates\SMS Advanced Client\UpdateVersion
In this subkey, the
UpdateVersion placeholder represents the software update build number.
By default, this registry subkey is not created when you install the original release version of the SMS Advanced Client. This registry subkey is only created when you install a software update or a service pack.
To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.
Install the latest SMS 2003 Advanced Client software update or service pack.
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
Create the required registry subkey. To create the registry subkey, follow these steps:
- Log on to the SMS Advanced Client that is generating the error by using an account that has administrative permissions.
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
- Right-click Updates, point to New, and then click Key.
- Type SMS Advanced Client for the new key name.
- Right-click SMS Advanced Client, point to New, and then click Key.
- Type the version number of the SMS Advanced Client for the new key name. For example, type
2.50.4160.2000for the SMS SP2 Advanced Client.
Note To determine the SMS Advanced Client version, open Control Panel, double-click Systems Management, and then click the Components tab.
