SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 agent-managed computer, the MOM service may use 100 percent of CPU operations. When this problem occurs, the MOM service may stop responding. Additionally, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • The MOM agent no longer processes events, performance data, and alerts.
  • The heartbeat for the MOM agent is delayed.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must apply this hotfix on each computer that meets either of the following conditions:

  • The computer hosts a MOM 2005 Management Server Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • The computer hosts a manually installed MOM 2005 agent Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Restart requirement

You must restart the MOM service after you apply this hotfix.

Installation instructions

To apply this hotfix, follow these steps:

  1. Copy the MOM2005-SP1-KB932767-X86-IA64-ENU.MSI file to a local folder or to a shared folder on the network. If you use a shared folder, make sure that the computers that require this hotfix can access the folder.
  2. Log on to one of the computers that require this hotfix by using administrative credentials.
  3. Run the MOM2005-SP1-KB932767-X86-IA64-ENU.MSI file. (You can run the file at a command prompt, or you can run the file by using Windows Explorer.)
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on each computer that requires this hotfix.

To apply this hotfix in your MOM environment, follow these steps.

MOM 2005 servers

Manually apply this hotfix to each MOM 2005 server in your MOM management groups.

MOM 2005 agents

To apply this hotfix to the MOM 2005 agent component, use one of the following methods, depending on the situation.

  • Use the MOM 2005 Administrator console to apply this hotfix to each MOM 2005 agent whose control level is set to "Full." A list of the MOM 2005 agents that can be automatically updated appears in the Microsoft Operations Manager ServerName\Administration\Computers\Pending Actions folder.
  • Manually apply this hotfix to each MOM 2005 agent whose control level is set to "None." A list of these agents appears in the Microsoft Operations Manager ServerName\Administration\Computers\Agent-managed Computers folder.
  • To apply this hotfix to MOM 2005 agents whose control level is set to "Full" when the agents were manually installed after this hotfix was applied to the server, use one of the following methods:
    • Manually apply the hotfix to each MOM 2005 agent.
    • Use the MOM 2005 server to apply this hotfix. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Use the Pending Actions folder in the MOM 2005 Administrator console to make sure that the manual installation of the MOM 2005 agents is approved.
      2. Click the Agent-managed Computers folder in the MOM 2005 Administrator console, right-click the MOM 2005 agent in the details pane, and then click Update Agent Settings.
