SYMPTOMS
When you try to add a Windows Media Center Extender to a Windows Vista Media Center-based computer, you receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Windows Vista Media Center-based computer cannot find the Extender on the network.
THINGS TO TRY
Method 1
Verify that the Windows Vista Media Center-based computer and the Media Center Extender are connected to the same network.

Method 2
Determine whether firewall settings or privacy programs are preventing communication between the computer and the console.

Method 3
- Install the latest driver for the network adapter on the computer. For more help about how to download and install the driver, contact the computer manufacturer.
- Use a different network adapter to help determine whether the network adapter is causing the issue.
Method 4
Verify that the computer is not joined to a domain. To determine whether Group Policy settings are causing the connection issue, temporarily remove the computer from the domain, restart the computer, and then again try to add the Media Center Extender.
