SYMPTOMS

You try to install the Microsoft SoftGrid Virtual Application Server. However, the installation is not successful, and you receive the following error message:

The installation program was unable to connect to the domain. Please verify that the provided information is correct, or select Cancel to abort the installation.

CAUSE

These symptoms can occur when one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • The SoftGrid Virtual Application Server computer account is not a member of the domain that is specified as the domain name on the installation's Directory Server screen.
  • The domain name that is specified on the installation's Directory Server screen is inaccessible.
  • The Windows account for the user name that is specified on the installation's Directory Server screen is configured incorrectly. The account may be inaccessible for the following reasons:
    • The account does not exist.
    • The account is disabled.
    • The account is locked out.
    • The account has expired.
    • The User must change password at next logon setting is enabled for the account.
  • The password that is specified on the installation's Directory Server screen is invalid, or the password contains a number sign (#) character.
  • The domain does not contain a Domain Users group.

WORKAROUND

Use one or more of these methods to work around the issue, as appropriate for your situation. Then, install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server.

The SoftGrid Virtual Application Server computer account is not a member of the domain that is specified as the domain name on the installation's Directory Server screen

When you install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to the computer by using a domain account.
  2. Make sure that this domain account is in the same domain in which the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server is installed.

The domain name that is specified on the installation's Directory Server screen is inaccessible

When you install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to the computer by using a domain account.
  2. Make sure that this domain account is in the same domain in which the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server is installed.

Note When you log on to the domain, this verifies that the domain can be accessed, and that the computer is in the same domain.

The Windows account for the user name that is specified on the installation's Directory Server screen is configured incorrectly

To validate that the account configuration is correct, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. In the console tree, expand Active Directory Users and Computers, and then expand <Domain_Name>.

Note The <Domain_Name> placeholder represents the domain that contains the <Account_Name> that you have to validate.

  1. Right-click <Domain_Name>, and then click Find.
  2. Type the <Account_Name> that you have to validate in the Name box, and then click Find Now.
  3. Under Search results, right-click the <account name>, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Account tab.
  5. Click to clear the Account is locked out check box.
  6. Under Account options, click to clear the User must change password at next logon check box, and then click to clear the Account is disabled check box.
  7. Under Account expires, click Never.
  8. Click OK.

The password that is specified on the Directory Server screen of the installation contains a number sign (#) character

To work around this issue, temporarily change the password so that it does not contain the number sign (#) character. When the installation is complete, you can change the password back to the original password by using the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in or by using the Account Authorities node of the SoftGrid Management Console.

The domain does not contain a Domain Users group

To work around the issue, create a temporary group named Domain Users. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. In the console tree, expand Active Directory Users and Computers, and then expand <Domain_Name>.

Note The <Domain_Name> placeholder represents the domain to which you have to add a Domain Users group.

  1. Right-click Users, point to New, and then click Group.
  2. For Group name, type Domain Users, and then click OK.

Note After the installation is complete, the Domain Users group can be deleted.

Note When the installation program validates the domain name, the user name, and the password, the installation program has to bind to the Domain Users group. If this group does not exist, the installation will not be successful.
