Error message in a Group Policy object after you add the Desktopstandard.adm administrative template: "An error has occurred while collecting data for Administrative Templates"

Article ID: 931016

Article Last Modified on 1/29/2007

APPLIES TO

  • PolicyMaker Standard Edition 2.0

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You add the Desktopstandard.adm administrative template to a Group Policy object (GPO). Then, in the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC), you click the GPO and then click the Settings tab. In this scenario, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Administrative Templates
An error has occurred while collecting data for Administrative Templates.
The following errors were encountered:
The .adm file "path\desktopstandard.adm" is not in a valid format and must be replaced. Details: A string is expected at line 78.

CAUSE

A default behavior in GPMC causes this problem. Earlier versions of GPMC do not support variables that are used for the value data in a default registry value. For example, the administrative template may contain the following code.

VALUENAME ""
VALUEON "!!CSE_Applications"

In this case, GPMC does not accept the variable as a valid format. Instead, GPMC accepts the following code.

VALUENAME ""
VALUEON "PolicyMaker Applications Policy Processing"

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Install GPMC 1.0.2 or a later version. To obtain GPMC 1.0.2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Method 2

Install an updated version of the Desktopstandard.adm administrative template. To obtain the updated version, visit the following Desktop Standard FTP site:

The updated administrative template works with GPMC.
