Error message when you try to install Windows Vista by using a computer's DVD drive: "Windows cannot install required files"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows Vista by using a computer's DVD drive, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x800706F8

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the DVD drive's firmware is either out of date or defective. For example, you may experience this problem if you use a Samsung SM-308B DVD drive or a Samsung SN-308B DVD drive.

Note Both the Samsung SM-308B DVD drive and the Samsung SN-308B DVD drive are used as components in the Combo drives that are installed in Dell computers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, obtain the appropriate firmware update for the computer's DVD drive. To do this, visit one of the following Dell Web sites, as appropriate for your circumstances:
