SYMPTOMS

You cannot log on to Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS). The "Personalizing settings for Internet Explorer" window remains indefinitely on the upper-left part of the screen.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when a Windows Internet Explorer 7 installation does not successfully finish.

Note Internet Explorer 7 may be installed automatically if Automatic Updates is enabled on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Connect to the Windows SBS server by using Remote Desktop Connection from a client computer.
  2. Log on to the Windows SBS server by using an account that has administrator permissions.
  3. Complete the Internet Explorer 7 configuration. For example, configure settings such as the phishing filter and the default search provider.
  4. Restart the Windows SBS server from the remote desktop session.
  5. Directly log on to the Windows SBS server.
