APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that has Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) Client 1.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed, you cannot open a rights-managed e-mail message. When this problem occurs, the following events are logged on the RMS server:

Event ID: 25

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: RMS
Event Category: General
Event ID: 25
Date: date
Time: time
User: N/A
Computer: computer_name
Description: A publishing license template stored on the server is no longer available because it appears to have been tampered with. The following information was reported: {fb743c7e-7a7a-4211-99e6-df241dee9415}

Event ID: 141

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: RMS
Event Category: General
Event ID: 141
Date: date
Time: time
User: N/A
Computer: computer_name
Description: The certificate name, type, value, calculated and embedded digests for XrML 1.2 signature validation were the following:
NA
NA
NA
{23,63,f1,0f,c3,62,1a,7c,aa,47,8d,3b,37,9a,d1,db,c4,79,cb,bf}
{a9,72,d7,80,a7,95,2a,c6,24,14,0e,de,15,4e,c8,1c,c1,9e,a1,51}
The validation failed because the two digests do not match.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:

  • A process changes the rights policy template in the SQL database.
  • The calculated digest and the embedded digest do not match. Therefore, XrML 1.2 signature validation is unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to the RMS server.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Windows RMS, and then click Windows RMS Administration.
  3. In the Provisioning and Administration area, click Administer RMS on this Web site.
  4. Under Administration links, click Rights policy templates, and then click the rights policy template.
  5. On the Rights policy template settings page, click Submit.
