You receive the installation error message 0037-80070643 when you try to install Windows Live OneCare

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows Live OneCare, you receive the following error message that has the error code 0037-80070643:

Installation did not succeed
An error occurred during Window Live OneCare Installation. Please contact support.

CAUSE

The Windows Live OneCare service was not installed correctly because of permissions-related problems in the registry.

RESOLUTION

Modify the permissions, and then delete a registry key that is related to Windows Live OneCare. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Close the Windows Live OneCare installation program.
  2. Open Registry Editor:

    Windows Vista
    • Click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
      [GRAPHIC: User Account Control] If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    Microsoft Windows XP

    • Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WinSS registry key, and then expand the WinSS registry key.
  4. Locate the following subkey:

    {74F777F9-6EB9-4939-9707-C5026A1FAB6F}

  5. Right-click the {74F777F9-6EB9-4939-9707-C5026A1FAB6F} subkey, and then click Permissions.
  6. In the Permissions dialog box, make sure that Administrator Group has Full Control, and then close the dialog box.
  7. Manually delete the {74F777F9-6EB9-4939-9707-C5026A1FAB6F} subkey.
  8. Restart the computer, and then reinstall Windows Live OneCare.
