To deploy Windows Update hotfixes to a Microsoft TV server, follow these steps.
Step 1: Review the hotfix information
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- In Search Support, type the number of the hotfix.
- Review the description of the hotfix. Follow the instructions in the description unless the Microsoft TV program has recommended any other methods to apply the hotfix.
Step 2: Prepare for data recovery
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- If you are prompted to update the version of Windows Update on the computer, do so.
- Click Custom, and then click High Priority and Software, Optional to select the hotfixes based on the Microsoft TV Approved Windows Update Hotfix list.
- Click Details at the end of the description of the hotfix that you want to install.
- Follow the instructions in the How to Uninstall section to prepare for a critical failure. Typically, these instructions describe how to create a data recovery hard disk. This step is very important if the hotfix cannot be uninstalled.
Note If you can uninstall the hotfix by using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, these instructions may not be listed.
Step 3: Install the hotfix
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- If you are prompted to update the version of Windows Update on the computer, do so.
- Click Custom, and then click High Priority and Software, Optional to select the hotfixes based on the Microsoft TV Approved Windows Update Hotfix list.
- Click Clear All to make sure that no hotfixes are selected, check the hotfixes that are listed on the Microsoft TV Approved Windows Update Hotfix list, and then click Review and install updates.
Note Some hotfixes may not appear until some other hotfixes are installed. Run Windows Update repeatedly until all necessary hotfixes are installed. - Click Install Updates.
- Click I Accept to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.
- If you are prompted to restart the computer and this computer is not a part of a redundant set of servers, restart the computer. If the computer is part of a redundant set of servers, such as one of multiple front-end servers, do not restart more than one these computers at the same time.
- If you are not prompted to restart the computer, close all the final windows that are opened by Windows Update.
- Repeat steps 3a through 3i to determine whether other hotfixes are now available to be installed. If there are no available hotfixes, the installation is complete.
What to do if the hotfix causes a problem and must be uninstalled
To uninstall the hotfix, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
- Click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click the Show Updates option.
- Scroll down to Windows Server 2003 – Software Updates.
- Click the hotfix that you want to uninstall, and then click Remove.
If you cannot uninstall the hotfix, follow the instructions for data recovery. For example, restore the Microsoft TV configuration files from the data recovery hard disk.
