SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2) to Windows Vista Enterprise, you cannot use the remote fax printer settings to send fax messages.

CAUSE

By default, fax printer settings are not installed in Windows Vista Enterprise. Therefore, the Windows XP Professional SP2 remote fax printer settings do not function automatically in Windows Vista Enterprise.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the Windows Package Manager to install the fax printer settings in Windows Vista Enterprise.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the fax printer software installation media in the computer's CD drive or DVD drive.
  2. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  3. At the command prompt, type pkgmgr.exe /ip:"{fax printer software}", and then press ENTER.

Note Replace the fax printer software placeholder with the path of the fax printer software installation media.

  1. Follow the installation instructions that the fax printer software provides.
  2. After you install the fax printer software, close the Command Prompt window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
