SYMPTOMS

You experience the following symptoms on a computer that is running Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for Exchange or Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for SMTP Gateways:

  • The Antigen Service randomly exits.
  • The following event is logged in the System log:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7031
    Date: date
    Time: time
    User: N/A
    Computer: ServerName
Description: The AntigenService service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if objects in the Active Directory directory service have very long names. When the Antigen Service creates an LDAP path, the Antigen Service uses a fixed size buffer to store the path information. If you use long names in Active Directory, the size of the LDAP path that the Antigen Service creates may be larger than can be copied to the buffer successfully. Therefore, the Antigen Service exits.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this hotfix, the maximum path size that the Antigen Service uses is increased by four times. This is to help reduce the probability that you experience the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section when you use long names in Active Directory. Also, this hotfix adds validation checks to help make sure that a long LDAP path does cause the Antigen Service to exit. Instead, an error is logged.
