SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use Microsoft Office Excel Web Access to view a Microsoft Office Excel 2007 workbook in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. The workbook contains a data connection to a networked Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services database. In this scenario, you may receive an error message that resembles the following when you try to update the data connection to the Analysis Services database:

Data Refresh Failed Unable to retrieve external data for the following connections The data source may be unreachable, may not be responding, or has denied access.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because SQL Server impersonates the user credentials after SQL Server sets the initialization properties.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem in Excel 2007, use the same user credentials to set the data source properties and to call the Initialize interface on the OLE DB provider.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
