INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to set up a restricted-access Web in Microsoft Expression Web.

MORE INFORMATION

A restricted-access Web is a Web site that can be viewed only by specific users. Expression Web can restrict a whole Web site. However, Expression Web cannot restrict separate pages, sections, or folders in a Web site.

To set up a restricted-access Web in Expression Web, you must configure the subsite to use unique permissions. Then, grant access permission to the users whom you want to access the subsite. You can restrict access to a root Web. However, restricted access is typically set up on a subsite that has unique permissions.

A subsite is a Web that is nested inside another Web. By default, all subsites inherit the same permissions settings as their parent Webs. However, you can set unique permissions for subsites. Each subsite can have its own set of permissions that specify who can browse, author, or administer the subsite. You can set up individual subsites with different levels of permissions and different groups of users.

For example, http://server name is a root Web, and http://server name/subsite name is a subsite.

Method 2: Use Expression Web to convert a folder to a subsite

  1. In Expression Web, click File, and then click Open Site.
  2. In the Look in list, locate the Web that you want to open, and then click Open.

Method 3: Use Expression Web to import a Web into a folder and to convert the folder to a subsite

  1. In Expression Web, click File, and then click Open Web.
  2. In the Look in list, locate the Web into which you want to import the subsite, and then click Open.
  3. Click File, point to Import, and then click File.
  4. In the Import dialog box, click Add File, Add Folder, or From Site.
  5. In the Look In box, locate the folder or the Web that you want to import, and then click Open.
  6. Convert the folder to a subsite by using the steps that are described in "Method 2: Use Expression Web to convert a folder to a subsite."
