256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (PSConfigUI.exe), the wizard does not start. Additionally, you cannot remove Microsoft Office Project Server 2007.

This problem occurs after you install Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and then you install Project Server 2007 on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the SETUPTYPE value in the registry may change from V2V_GRADUAL_UPGRADE to SKU2SKU_UPGRADE.

WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this problem, you must remove Project Server 2007, upgrade Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, and then reinstall Project Server 2007. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, rename the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\Secure\ConfigDB

Rename this subkey to the following:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\Secure\ConfigDB_BU

  3. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.
  4. Follow the steps to remove Project Server 2007.
  5. In Registry Editor, rename the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\Secure\ConfigDB_BU

    Rename this subkey as follows:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\Secure\ConfigDB

  6. In Registry Editor, make sure that the upgrade type is set correctly in the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\WSS\SetupType

Make sure that V2V_GRADUAL_UPGRADE is used for a gradual upgrade and that V2V_INPLACE_UPGRADE is used for an in-place upgrade.
  7. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.
  8. Follow the steps in the wizard.
  9. When the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard has finished, reinstall Project Server 2007.
