WD: Drop Caps Not Wrapping Around Framed Objects in MacWord

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q92851

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.1, 6.0,6.0.1,6.0.1a

SUMMARY

In Word for the Macintosh, if you insert a frame near a paragraph that contains a drop cap, the drop cap text does not wrap around the frame. Instead, the drop cap may overlap the frame. This happens because Word uses frame formatting to create a drop cap. As a result, the drop cap cannot wrap around the frame along with the rest of the paragraph text. This situation is similar to the problem described on page 416 of the "Microsoft Word User's Guide," in which two frames overlap if you assign them to the same position on the page.

WORKAROUND

To reposition the drop cap, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Page Layout.
  2. Position the insertion point at the beginning of the paragraph that contains the drop cap that overlaps the frame. Click the margin scale button ([]) on the ruler to display margin markers ([]) on the ruler. Note the correct position on the ruler for the drop cap, relative to the left margin bracket.
  3. Select the drop cap. On the Format menu, click Frame.
  4. In the Horizontal box, type the measurement you noted in step 2 above. Select Column in the Horizontal Relative To box. Click OK.

NOTE: These steps separate the drop cap and framed object but may not correctly position the drop cap. To make further adjustments, click Frame on the Format menu or click Print Preview on the File menu and drag the drop cap to the correct position.

MORE INFORMATION

Word for the Macintosh aligns the drop cap with the original left margin instead of the modified left margin that wraps around the frame.

In Print Preview, you cannot select the Drop Cap, because it is hidden behind the framed object, so you cannot drag the Drop Cap to the correct position.

Drop caps more frequently overlap framed objects in a multiple-column section.
