Shaded graphic objects may not print as expected in a 2007 Office program

SYMPTOMS

You print a document that contains a shaded graphic object in a 2007 Microsoft Office program. If you print the document to a non-PostScript black-and-white printer, the shaded graphic objects may not print as expected. The printed colors and tones of some objects may differ from those of the original document. Or, a line may be printed on the object.

Additionally, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms when you print the shaded graphic objects:

• The shading on some graphic objects may be lighter than expected, whereas the shading on some other graphic objects is as dark as expected.
• The shading in parts of a graphic object may be lighter than expected, whereas the shading in some other parts of the same graphic object is as dark as expected.

These symptoms occur regardless of the type of printer that you are using.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you insert the following objects in a 2007 Office program:

• Graphs, SmartArt graphics, shapes, or images that have the following effects applied:
  • Blur
  • Reflection
  • Shadow
  • Sparkling
  • Three-dimensional formatting
• Images that are handled by using the transparent process

This issue may also occur if the following conditions are true:

• You create a document that includes these objects by using a version of an Office program that is earlier than the 2007 Office program.
• You open and then print the document by using a 2007 Office program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

1. Configure the document to use a lower resolution, such as 300 dots per inch (dpi). To do this, follow these steps:
   1. In Control Panel, open the printer folder.
   2. Right-click the printer whose resolution you want to change, and then click Print Preferences.
   3. Click Advanced.
   4. In the Graphic section, change the dpi value in the Print Quality list.
2. Manually set the printer color calibration. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. In Control Panel, open the printer folder.
   2. Right-click the printer whose color calibration you want to set, and then click Properties.
   3. Click the Color Management tab, and then click Manual. You can select from the existing profiles, or you can add different color profiles to the list.
