You cannot use the internal leading that is provided by an East Asian ClearType font in Word 2007

Article ID: 927078

Article Last Modified on 10/15/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Word 2007

SYMPTOMS

When you use an East Asian ClearType font in Microsoft Office Word 2007, you cannot use the internal leading that is provided by the font. The text that is formatted to use the East Asian ClearType font has too much space between the lines of text.

Note The following East Asian fonts experience this problem:

  • Microsoft Meiryo (Japanese)
  • Microsoft JhengHei (Traditional Chinese)
  • Microsoft YaHei (Simplified Chinese)

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the East Asian version of Word 2007 uses an East Asian-specific document grid feature to set the number of lines per page and to calculate the document page layout.

The document grid feature assumes that East Asian fonts have an InternalLeading value of zero. Most East Asian fonts in earlier versions of Word have an InternalLeading value of zero.

The Meiryo, JhengHei, and YaHei fonts are East Asian ClearType fonts. However, these fonts have an InternalLeading value that is not zero. Therefore, the East Asian ClearType font has too much space between lines of text in Word 2007.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem in Word 2007 documents that contain only Meiryo, JhengHei, or YaHei fonts, follow these steps:
