SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, you have a Microsoft Visual Basic Class Library project. In the Visual Basic Class Library project, a base class uses a type that is defined in a derived class. You use the Visual Basic Class Library project in a second project. Then, you perform one of the following operations:

  • You compile the second project by using the Visual Studio .NET 2003 IDE.
  • You compile the second project by using the command-line compiler (Vbc.exe).

In this scenario, you receive the following error message:

BC31091: Import of type '<unknown>' from assembly or module '<unknown>' failed

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a problem in the Visual Basic .NET 2003 compiler.
