On a Windows XP-based computer, the icon and label for an HD DVD, a Blu-ray Disc, or a DVD-RAM drive may not be displayed correctly in My Computer and in Windows Explorer

Article ID: 926969

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

SYMPTOMS

You connect a DVD-RAM drive, an HD DVD drive, or a Blu-ray Disc drive to a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer. However, the icon and label for the drive may not be displayed correctly in My Computer and in Windows Explorer. For example, a DVD drive icon or a CD drive icon is displayed instead of an HD DVD drive icon or a Blu-ray Disc drive icon. Additionally, the drive label indicates that the drive is a DVD drive or a CD drive instead of an HD DVD drive or a Blu-ray Disc drive. When you insert a DVD-RAM disc, a CD drive icon is displayed instead of a DVD-RAM drive icon.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Windows Explorer shell does not yet recognize these new drive types. Therefore, the icon and label that are displayed correspond to the next known supported drive that has similar capabilities.

RESOLUTION

No action is required to resolve this issue. This issue affects only how the icon and the label are displayed in Windows Explorer and in My Computer. The issue does not affect the functionality of these drives. An HD DVD drive, a Blu-ray Disc drive, or a DVD-RAM drive can still be used for HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD-RAM content.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
