APPLIES TO

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You install Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Beta version in a server farm. This server farm contains multiple front-end servers that use Network Load Balancing (NLB). You visit a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Beta site and enter data in a List Item form. In this scenario, you receive the following error message when you try to save the form:

System.Web.HttpException: Unable to validate data. at System.Web.Configuration.MachineKeySection.GetDecodedData(Byte[] buf, Byte[] modifier, Int32 start, Int32 length, Int32& dataLength) at System.Web.UI.ObjectStateFormatter.Deserialize(String inputString)

CAUSE

This issue occurs when you enter data in a List Item form on a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Beta site. If a front-end server that uses Network Load Balancing fails over to another front-end server before you save the data in the List Item form, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the Symptoms section.

STATUS

This problem has been fixed in the release version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
