Error message when you try to delete an account in Small Business Accounting 2006: "You cannot delete one or more Financial Accounts because they may be referenced by other accounting records"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to delete an account in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006, you receive the following error message:

You cannot delete one or more Financial Accounts because they may be referenced by other accounting records. If you no longer use this Financial Account, you can mark it as inactive. For more information, click Help.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when transactions are associated with the account that you are trying to delete.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, set the status of the account to inactive. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Company menu, point to Company Lists, and then click Chart of Accounts.
  2. Right-click the account that you are trying to delete, and then click Open Selected Items.
  3. In the Account information area, click to clear the Active check box.
  4. Click Save and Close.


MORE INFORMATION

To view all transactions that are associated with the account, follow these steps:

  1. On the Company menu, point to Company Lists, and then click Chart of Accounts.
  2. Right-click the account that you are trying to delete, and then click Open Selected Items.
  3. On the Actions menu, click Transaction Journal.


In the Transaction Journal dialog box, all transactions that are associated with the account are displayed.
