Error message when you try to run stsadm.exe -o setconfigdb together with the -hh parameter in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: "Command line error. Invalid parameter"

Article ID: 925426

Article Last Modified on 5/14/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

SYMPTOMS

You try to run the stsadm.exe -o setconfigdb command together with the -hh parameter to create a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 configuration database or to specify a connection to an existing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 configuration database. For example, you type the following command at the command line:

stsadm -o setconfigdb -databaseserverServerName -hh

When you do this, you receive the following error message:

Command line error. Invalid parameter

Additionally, when you type stsadm -help setconfigdb to view the options for the setconfigdb command, the -hh option is listed in the following code.

stsadm.exe -o setconfigdb
           [-connect]
           -databaseserver <database server>
           [-databaseuser <database user>]
           [-databasepassword <database user password>]
           [-databasename <database name>]
           [-hh]
           [-exclusivelyusentlm]
           [-farmuser]
           [-farmpassword]
           [-adcreation]
           [-addomain <Active Directory domain>]
           [-adou <Active Directory OU>]

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the -hh parameter was used to turn on scalable hosting mode in Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. However, the -hh parameter is no longer used with the setconfigdb option in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the -hostheaderwebapplicationurl parameter when you use the stsasdm -o createsite command to create a Windows SharePoint Services site. This lets Windows SharePoint Services sites that are in scalable hosting mode communicate with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) virtual server sites that are not in scalable hosting mode.

The following is an example of how to use the -hostheaderwebapplicationurl parameter when you use the stsasdm -o createsite command to create a Windows SharePoint Services site:

stsadm.exe -o createsite -url url -ownerlogin DOMAIN\name -owneremail someone@example.com -hostheaderwebapplicationurl Web application url

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
