SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you may receive the following error message when you try to use a three-dimensional (3-D) screen saver:

Could not create the Direct3D device.

When you try to preview a 3-D screen saver in the Display Properties dialog box, you may receive the following error message:

No preview available

This problem may occur in the following scenario:

  1. Media Center is running in full-screen mode.
  2. You watch live TV. Or, you play a DVD video.
  3. You put the computer on standby or into hibernation without pausing or stopping Media Center.
  4. You resume the computer from standby or hibernation.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem after it has occurred, exit and then restart Media Center.

To prevent this problem, pause or stop the DVD video. Or, stop the live TV show. Then, put the computer on standby or into hibernation.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
