933360 August 2007 cumulative time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems

This article describes a test version of an update. This test version is provided for testing only. Do not install this update on computers in a production environment. If you install this update on computers in a production environment, calendar appointments and other events that are scheduled between October 27, 2006 and November 5, 2006 may show an incorrect time. Additionally, the clock on the computer will not automatically adjust to the standard time settings on October 27, 2006. Instead, the clock will automatically adjust to show the time as one hour earlier on November 5, 2006. This behavior occurs because the update applies the daylight saving time (DST) settings that occur in 2007 to the time settings in 2006.

If this update is not removed from computers in your test environment by October 27, 2006, the clock will not be adjusted correctly.

INTRODUCTION

A test version of a time zone update for 2007 is now available for computers that are running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows XP. In the spring of 2007, the start dates and the end dates for DST in the United States will change to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The dates will change as follows:

  • DST starts on the second Sunday in March at 2:00 A.M. Therefore, DST in 2007 starts three weeks earlier than DST in 2006.
  • DST ends on the first Sunday in November at 2:00 A.M. Therefore, DST ends one week later than in prior years.

The test version of the global time zone update that Microsoft will release is now available. The update includes the new start dates and end dates for DST in the United States. Additionally, the update includes the following:

  • Changes to DST and time zone settings that occur around the world in 2007.
  • Changes to DST and time zone settings that have occurred since the products in the "Applies to" section were originally released. For example, the update includes some changes that were previously released as individual updates that were documented in articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

To apply the changes, the update modifies time zone settings in the registry and registers the changes in Microsoft Windows. To view a list of these registry settings, see the "DST and Time Zone Settings" section later in this article.
