SYMPTOMS

The Exchange Best Practices Analyzer Cites in the Critical Issues List, the following error:

Missing FQDN in <exchangeattributename> service principal name

For example:
Missing FQDN in 'exchangeMDB' service principal name
Missing FQDN in 'exchangeRFR' service principal name
Missing NetBIOS in 'exchangeMDB' service principal name
Missing NetBIOS in 'exchangeRFR' service principal name

CAUSE

The service principal values are missing from the active directory attribute on the server machine account object.

RESOLUTION

Use ADSIEdit to manually add the attributes.

ADSIEdit is available as part of the windows 200/2003 Support tools available for download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
To correct the problem:

Open ADSIEdit.
Open ADSIEdit and navigate to the following:

CN=servername,CN=containerpath,DC=domain,DC=com.

Substitute your domain name and container path.

Note: If the container path to the server machine account object is unknown, use Active Directory Users and Computers to search for the server, and then select the Object tab to get the container path. By default the server machine account object will be located in the Computers container immediately under the domain. If the Object tab is not visible, enable Advanced Features from the View pull down menu.

Right click on the server machine account object and select Properties. From the Properties list navigate to the serviceprincipalname attribute and add the missing values.

For example:

exchangeMDB/NetBIOS domain name
exchangeMDB/Fully qualified domain name
exchangeRFR/NetBIOS domain name
exchangeRFR/Fully qualified domain name
