INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 issue that is fixed in the hotfix package that is dated August 14, 2006.

Issue that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

Error message when a user tries to save an Office document that is attached to an item in a tasks list: "<URLofOfficeDocument> cannot be accessed"

Consider the following scenario. A user connects to a Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 tasks list. Then, the user opens a Microsoft Office document that is attached to an item in the list. The document opens in the Office program. The user makes changes to the document, saves it, and then exits the Office program. The user reopens the document in the Office program. Then, the user makes changes to the document. However, when the user tries to save the document again, the user receives the following error message:

<URLofOfficeDocument> cannot be accessed. The file may not exist or may be in use or the Web server is temporarily busy.

The user cannot access the document for approximately 10 minutes because of the file lock that occurs. The user experiences these symptoms even though the user is the same user who previously opened the document.

This issue occurs if the user does not have Manage List permissions to the tasks list. For example, this issue occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • The user is a member of the Readers site group.
  • The permissions that the Readers site group has for the tasks list are changed to the following:
    • View List Items
    • Add List Items
    • Edit List Items
    • Manage Personal Views
