Summary:

A “PC LOAD LETTER” message is generated on the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Series II printer when you try to print using the HPLASLAN printer driver with the “page length:” field set to 8.5 inches and “page width:” field set to 14 inches.

A modification to the printer driver is needed to enable successful landscape printing using a legal-size paper tray.

Multiplan version 4.01 is supplied with the MAKEPRD utility on the Utilities Disk, which facilitates modifying printer drivers. This utility converts a binary printer driver into an ASCII text file that can be modified with a word processor or line editor.

More Information:

  1. Run the MAKEPRD utility from the Multiplan subdirectory. When the program prompts for a printer driver name, type HPLASLAN.PRD. When the program prompts for a text-file name, type HPLASLAN.TXT. Select “T” at the next prompt to have MAKEPRD convert from PRD to Text.

  2. In a word processor or line editor, open the ASCII text file generated from the MAKEPRD utility.

  3. Search for the line beginning with “byte:0” (without the quotation marks). Change the following

    byte:0 mod:0 “[&l1o6D[&k12H”

    to read as follows:

    byte:0 mod:0 “[&l3a1o1h6D[&k12H”

  4. Search for the line beginning with “byte:8” (without the quotation marks). Change the following

    byte:8 mod:4 magic:0 value:0 “^[&l”

    to read as follows:

    byte:8 mod:1 magic:0 value:0

  5. Save the modifications to the printer driver and exit the word processor or editor.

  6. Run the MAKEPRD utility from the Multiplan subdirectory. When the program prompts for a printer driver name, type HPLEGLAN.PRD. The new driver created is used exclusively for legal landscape printing. HPLASLAN is used for letter-size landscape printing. When the program prompts for a text-file name, type HPLASLAN.TXT. Select “P” at the next prompt to have MAKEPRD convert from Text to PRD.

  7. Run Multiplan and go into Print Options. In the “printer:” field, press the RIGHT ARROW key to get a list of available drivers. Select the new HPLEGLAN driver.

A side effect of this procedure is that the top margin set with the Print Margins command is off by .5 inches. To obtain a top margin of .5 inches, set the Print Margins “top:” field to 0. For a top margin of 1 inch, set the field to .5 inches.
