Word: Tabs Disappear in a Paragraph

In Word Versions 3.x, 4.00, and 5.00, set tabs are saved as a paragraph format. Consequently, tab positions in one paragraph may not be the same as in the next paragraph. Moving from one paragraph to the next may seem to cause the tabs to disappear or change positions when in fact the new paragraph contains different tab positions.

Make sure the relevant paragraphs are highlighted before choosing the Format Tab Set command to set tab stops. If the same tab positions are desired for the entire document, press SHIFT+F10 to highlight the entire document before setting tabs.

If text is added at the end of a document, the new paragraphs may not contain the paragraph formats applied above. To ensure that newly created paragraphs contain the same format as the paragraph immediately above, do the following:

  1. Set the Options “show non-printing symbols:” field to All in Word 5.00. In previous versions, set the Options “visible:” field to Complete.
  2. Position the cursor on the paragraph mark of a paragraph containing correct formatting.
  3. Press the ENTER key several times to duplicate the paragraph mark containing the desired format. Do not press the ENTER key while the cursor is on the diamond-shaped end mark at the end of the document. (Doing so causes the paragraph format to be set to the default instead of the desired format.)
  4. Resume typing from one of the newly created paragraph marks.
