Excel Err Msg: "Can't Find 'Filename'" When Opening a File

Last reviewed: November 2, 1994
Article ID: Q51540

SUMMARY

The Microsoft Excel error message "Can't find 'filename'" can occur as a result of two disks having the same name.

A common name for new floppy disks is "Untitled." If a hard disk is also named "Untitled" and a file on the floppy disk is opened, Excel might look to the hard disk first and not find the file. It will then display this message.

The same error is also possible with two floppy disks. To correct the problem, rename one of the disks.
