The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS versions 5.0, 5.5, 6.0

SUMMARY

The following steps ensure that the ruler at the top of the Word screen does not expand:

  1. Make sure that Show Layout mode is turned off. Show layout can be toggled on and off by pressing ALT+F4 or by selecting No in the Options “show layout:” field.

In Word versions 5.5, 6.0, show layout is toggled from the View menu.

  2. Turn off the display of line breaks. This can be toggled on and off by pressing ALT+F7 or by selecting No on the Options “show line breaks:” field.

In Word version 5.5, 6.0, the line breaks feature can be turned off from the View Preferences menu by pressing ALT+L to toggle the check box.

Regardless of the font size being used, these actions ensure that the ruler does not expand. When line breaks aren’t displayed or Show Layout mode is turned off, text may be positioned differently on the screen than it prints. The Print Preview command will let you view the document as it will be printed.
