Paragraph shading on the Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet appears very coarse because Word Version 5.00 uses the graphics characters (176-178) in the symbol set of the printer’s Courier font to perform the shading.
The characters internal to the DeskJet are very coarse, although this has been improved in the DeskJet Plus.
