File: Copying Data to Same Field with Different Attribute

Last reviewed: October 27, 1994
Article ID: Q47523

Summary:

When pasting data from a text field to a memo field (with the same name and relative position) in Microsoft File version 2.00, the field pasted into is blank.

For example, if there is a field "STUFF" (text) in one File database and it is copied and pasted into another "STUFF" (memo) field, nothing is pasted and the cell remains blank.

To work around this problem, do the following:

  1. Open the data file from which you want to copy all the data.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save Records As.
  3. Save the records as Text and type in a new name.
  4. From the File menu, choose Open Datafile and open the data file into which the records are to be pasted.
  5. From the File menu, choose Open Datafile and select the text document you just saved.
  6. Click Open. The records are pasted below all the current records.
