SUMMARY

To get an em dash (a long dash that indicates an abrupt change in a sentence or sets off explanatory material) with Microsoft Word versions 5.00 and 5.50, enter it with the CTRL+ALT+HYPHEN key combination.

Word uses ASCII character 196 internally as a soft hyphen, so the em dash has been remapped to ASCII character 15, which is obtained by pressing CTRL+ALT+HYPHEN.

In a font that has a character translation table associated with it, any character sequence located at 196 prints when a CTRL+ALT+HYPHEN is encountered in a document.
