When using Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, if the Commands command does not appear on the Tools menu for Word 5.0 or the Edit menu when in full menus mode in Word 4.0, follow these steps to restore Commands to the current Settings file:
Word versions 5.0 and 5.1
- Press COMMAND+OPTION+SHIFT+C from the keyboard to get into Commands. NOTE: If the Commands dialog box does not display, the default keystroke for this command may have been removed. If this is the case, use the procedure listed below for Word version 4.
- Choose “Commands…” from the list.
- In the Menu section, click Add.
- The Tools menu should flash briefly.
- Click the Close button.
- Commands will appear under the Tools menu.
Word version 4.0
From the File menu, choose Quit to exit the Word program.
Open the System Folder, and rename the Word Settings (4) file.
Start the Word program again.
When you start Word version 4.0 without a file named “Word Settings (4)” in the System Folder, Word automatically creates a new file with this name. This new settings file contains all the original default settings, including menu configurations, key assignments, Preferences options, and so on.
From the Edit menu, choose Full Menus. The next time you pull down the Edit menu, the Commands command appears.
Click the Open button in the Commands Dialog Box.
Select the settings file that was renamed in step 2.
Click the Open button.
Scroll down to the Commands command in the list box of the Commands dialog box.
Click the Add button in the Add to Menu section of the dialog box.
To allow the renamed settings file to be loaded upon startup by default, rename it “Word Settings (4)” by clicking the Save As button in the Commands dialog box. This saves any custom configurations that you add.
